Scleral Lenses & Systemic Disease

Scleral Lenses & Systemic Disease

July 12 (8:30 pm)

Speaker: Dr. Jennifer Liao

Join the Scleral Lens Education Society for an immersive experience into scleral lenses & systemic disease!

Managing scleral lenses in patients with systemic disease goes far beyond the fit of the lens on the eye. This course will review ocular conditions that commonly manifest from systemic diseases, how scleral lenses are indicated, and end with case-based discussions of scleral lens management considerations in systemic disease. This course will focus on considering the patient’s entire health history when managing ocular conditions with scleral lenses, and how understanding the systemic disease is crucial to lens fitting considerations.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Recognize how scleral lenses can successfully manage ocular conditions that manifest from systemic diseases.
  1. Understand different scleral lens designs and fitting techniques for success in managing ocular diseases.
  1. Recognize how systemic disease manifestations and treatments can impact scleral lens care, and appreciate that scleral lens care involves assessing the patient’s whole health

Jennifer Liao, OD, FAAO, FSLS

Dr. Jennifer Liao is an Assistant Professor of Optometry at the New England College of Optometry (NECO)
and Attending Optometrist in the contact lens service at NECO Center for Eye Care.
She earned her Doctorate in Optometry with honors from NECO, and completed a residency in Cornea
and Contact Lenses the following year, where she worked with leading clinicians in a variety of clinical
settings in the Great Boston Area.

Prior to returning to the New England College of Optometry in 2020, Dr. Liao practiced in Toronto, Canada
as Canada’s first PROSE provider and as the Director of Contact Lens Services at the Vision Institute of
Canada. She founded the Therapeutic Contact Lens Clinic at the Kensington Eye Institute of the University
of Toronto in 2015 with leading optometrists and ophthalmologists. This clinic served as a contact lens
referral clinic for patients with irregular corneas and severe ocular surface disease who had failed with
previous treatment options. Dr. Liao also practiced as an Associate Optometrist at a private practice in
the community she grew up in, where she provided primary care and myopia control services.
Dr. Liao is passionate about providing specialty eye care and education. She has enjoyed travelling as
volunteer faculty with Orbis International and Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanities (VOSH) to
India and the Dominican Republic to serve and teach local populations about contact lens capabilities and
management. She currently teaches the contact lens course, teaches specialty lenses didactically and
clinically, and lectures locally, nationally and internationally about specialty contact lenses. Dr. Liao is a
Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry and Scleral Lens Education Society.
